Visionary. Vibrant. Valiant.
That’s Vegas.
In six brief years, Las Vegas’s neon lights have shone brighter as professional sports teams set their roots in Sin City, becoming one of the fastest growing sports cities in the country. The untapped potential and partnership opportunities for those seeking to implement medical innovations in the sports medicine space absolutely exploded in southern Nevada.
Now, Vegas is home to world champion sports teams in a town that prides itself on reinvention time and time again.
Dr. Shawn Tsuda, chief medical officer at Viticus Group, touches on the nonprofit organizations plan in addressing Vegas's rapid emergence as the sports mecca. He highlights their commitment to providing a comprehensive education center in the heart of the city, fully prepared to take on this new challenge.
Vegas has frequently been defined as North America’s newest sports hub - has this increased the demand of sports medicine in the valley?
Dr. Tsuda: The increase of sports in Vegas, whether it’s professional like the NHL Stanley Cup Champions Golden Knights, NFL Raiders, WNBA repeat world champion Aces or performance arts, like the Cirque du Soleil shows, Las Vegas is the newest sports hub. As the city grows, the need for the treatment and prevention of injuries will increase.
Sports medicine has evolved over time to include performance or optimization of athletic performance. That’s why we like to refer to the broader term, sports health. In terms of practicality, it intersects with a lot of medical fields. Rehabilitation, orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, occupational therapy, physical therapy… it’s a very broad area that must do everything involved with physical activity related to sports, from pee wee baseball to the Super Bowl.
Q: How has Viticus Group responded to the rise of sports innovation in our community?
Dr. Tsuda: Viticus [Group] has a long history as a veterinary organization. When we moved into Human Health, our strength has been hosting innovators in orthopedics, spinal surgery, and pain management. Much of what we do is related or adjacent to sports medicine, and we are very well-positioned as an organization to be involved in the rise of sports health in Las Vegas.
That’s not just surgery though; we talk about innovation and sports health for a wide variety of things like innovation techniques, regenerative medicine, which we have been a supporter of recently. Compression therapy, orthopedics, electromagnetic pulse therapy, pain management, advanced imaging…these are all areas that we are exploring. We are seeing our partners and clients get more involved. Because we are centrally located in Las Vegas, it makes sense to deploy a lot of these technologies or training to health professionals here.
Q: What sets Viticus Group apart from other education centers specifically when it comes to sports medicine?
Dr. Tsuda: Viticus Group meets a very important niche because we have a strong history of hands-on training which requires a lot of expertise, state-of-the-art equipment, optimal space, logistics, regulatory knowledge, these are all things Viticus Group is good at. This is what really sets us apart. We can provide for someone who is looking to evolve or deploy sports technology or innovation.
Q: Is Viticus Group open to partnering with organizations in the sports industry to expand on providing innovative hands-on training?
Dr. Tsuda: We’re partnering with groups that are like-minded, creating synergies and education, training in sports medicine related technologies, and innovations. What this might look like is co-creating continuing education programs for physicians or allied health professionals in the broad field of sports medicine. It might look like supplementing educational activities with hands-on activities. We can provide that template of expertise to help them take that to the next level.
